Why Allah makes Women Bleed

One of the diminishing features of Islam – which stems from Muhammad – is its sick, prurient obsession with women’s bodies. Islam’s teachings about menstruation in the Quran and hadiths underscore this.

Sura 2:222 “They question thee (O Muhammad) concerning menstruation. Say: It is an illness, so let women alone at such times and go not unto them till they are cleaned. And when they have purified themselves then go in unto them as Allah hath enjoined upon you...”

The Quran depicts menstruation as an ailment; something harmful or unwholesome. The above instruction was plagiarised from the Torah without considering its dispensational timeline. Muhammad was born about 6 centuries after the time of Christ, hence, his return to the ceremonial laws given by Moses indicates a rejection of the liberty brought by Christ and this results in bondage.

The Mosaic laws did include menses as ritual uncleanness and disallows sexual contacts with women in that state (Lev. 15:19-24; 18:19), however, these laws were contingent and have been done away by Christ. “The law was put in charge to bring us to Christ that we might be justified by faith” (Gal. 3:24).

In contrast, Islamic beliefs about menstruation (and women in general) reduce it to something vile and satanic.

In the hadith, Muhammad says: “Sneezing, drowsing, yawning in prayer, also menstruation, vomiting and nose-bleeding are from (the acts of) Satan” (Tirmidhi, No. 315).

Apparently, Muhammad was the one repulsed by these reflex actions whenever he was with his followers; he wanted an undivided attention. So he conditioned them to see these linked with Satan. It was a tool of controlling the superstitious.

The problem is when Muslims today now take these injunctions, after some 14 centuries, as divine prescriptions which they impose on themselves. A reasonable Muslim needs to ask why an exalted God would be so offended by natural body reflexes.

In Muhammad’s biography, he quotes Allah saying: “It is My obligation to make Eve bleed once every month as she made this tree bleed. I must also make Eve stupid, although I created her intelligent. Because Allah afflicted Eve, all of the women of this world menstruate and are stupid” (Al-Tabari Vol. 1, p. 280).

Here we have Muhammad’s misogynist thinking being projected back onto his “Allah.”

On another occasion, Muhammad told a group of women that women are “deficient in intelligence and religion.” When one asked him “What is deficient in her religion?” He replied, “Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast in her menses?” The woman replied in the affirmative. He said “This is the deficiency of her religion” (Bukhari 1:6:303).

Muhammad and his Allah regarded women as doltish, spiritually deficient and cursed because of their monthly cycles. Allah finds menstruation repulsive, yet he supposedly “afflicted” women with it. He’s also offended by yawning, flatulence and mouth odour!

If Allah was really all-knowing, he should have explained to Muhammad that menstruation is a natural process that is crucial to women’s reproduction.

You see, people usually love to worship something that is identical to them. They may claim to worship an Infinite, Impersonal or Unknowable deity, but at a closer look, he is just as petty, feeble and small as they are – a deity made up to validate their desires and prejudices. That was Muhammad’s god.

An outgrowth of such a retrograde religious system is the burden of rules levied on women having their menses:

a) They must not pray to Allah. But when their menses are over they must make up for the prayer (Bukhari 1:6:303).

b) They cannot fast (Bukhari 1:6:301)

c) They are forbidden to do tawaaf (circumambulate) around the Kaaba (Bukhari 1:6:293).

d) They are not to stay in the mosques (Muslim, 298).

e) They must not have sexual intercourse (Q 2:222). This actually forbids men from physically touching them, but some jurists, seeing how the hadiths belie this rule, allow it.

f) They have to undergo a ritual bath (ghusl) at the end of their cycle (Bukhari 1:6:305).

With the many women surrounding Muhammad and his morbid fear of their menses, one would have expected that he strictly adhered to his own rules. But we see a different picture.

1. ‘Aisha narrated: “The prophet and I used to take a bath from a single pot while we were Junub. During my menses, he used to order me to put on an Izar dress (dress worn below the waist) and used to fondle me. While in Itikaf, he used to bring his head near me and I would wash it while I used to be in my periods (menses)” (Bukhari 1:6:298).

2. ‘Aisha said: “Whenever Allah’s apostle wanted to fondle anyone of us during her periods (menses) he used to order us to put on an Izar and start fondling her.” Aisha added “None of you could control his sexual desires as the Prophet could” (Bukhari 1:6:299).

One wonders why a man who had many wives, concubines and sex slaves in his household would resort to fondling his child bride who was in her menses. Some Shi’ite Muslims point out that the English translator of this hadith has censored these parts.

The Arabic word rendered as “fondled” there is mubasharath and it means to have sexual intercourse. Properly translated from Arabic, the second narration says: “If anyone of us was having her menstrual period, Allah’s Messenger ordered her to come to him for sexual intercourse while she was on the peak of her period” (Muslim 1:590).

The Kashaf al-Ghimma narrates Jabir words from Aisha: “During my menses, Rasulullah(s) would ‘bashr’ [have intercourse] with me. He would order me to tie a knot in a large cloth; after I did this he would embrace my chest” (p. 65).

This is one proof that Muhammad was a hypocritical, calculating charlatan who conveniently violated the “eternal words” of his Allah.

3. Aisha said Muhammad came to her place one night and said: “Come near me. I said: I am menstruating. He said: Uncover your thighs. I, therefore uncovered both of my thighs. Then he put his cheek on my thighs and I lent upon him until he became warm and slept” (Abu Dawud, 1:270).

4. Maimuna (the wife of the holy Prophet) reported: “The Messenger of Allah contacted and embraced his wives over the waist wrapper when they were menstruating” (Muslim, 3:579).

5. ‘Aisha said: “The Prophet used to lean on my lap and recite the Quran while I was in my menses” (Bukhari 1:6:296).

The Quran commands Muslim men to purify themselves with water or sand if they have touched women (Q 4:43). Muhammad himself told a woman “I do not shake hands with women” (Muwatta book 55 No. 55.1.2).

No Muslim in an impure state would dare touch the Quran, because it’s supposedly too holy to be touched. Yet their guru had no qualms wobbling in bed with women in their periods and even reciting the words of Allah on the laps of his menstruating child bride!

The same man who called menstruation an illness, an act of Satan and an affliction on women threw all that into the trash when it came to satisfying his lubricity.

Jesus Christ identified false religious leaders as persons who “tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s [and women’s] shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them” (Mt. 23:4).

This is an apt description of Muhammad. We invite honest Muslims to reject him and come to the way, truth and life, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Allah, Satan and the Hadiths

The hadiths give us more insights into Muhammad’s weird ideas about Satan. Below are quotes from the Sahih Bukhari hadith (unless otherwise indicated) and one from Ibn Ishaq’s Sirat Rasulallah (the earliest biography of Muhammad). My comments are below each quote.

I. There is none born among the offspring of Adam, but Satan touches it. A child therefore cries loudly at the time of birth because of the touch of Satan, except Mary and her child (4:641, narrated Saib Al-Musayab).

The world now knows better why babies cry at birth. This proves Muhammad was as inspired as lichen.

II. Allah’s Apostle said, ‘When the Adhan is pronounced, Satan takes to his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhan (1:582, Abu Huraira).

The adhan is the Islamic call to prayer in which the muadhan shouts: “Allahu akbar” (a total of 6 times), “I bear witness there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” (each 2x), “hurry to prayer” (2x) and “hurry to success” (2x).

This is what supposedly scares the daylight out of Satan. No, this was just a tool of control to pack the mosques.

III. Muhammad said:

If while you are praying someone intends to pass in front of you, prevent him, and should he insist, prevent him again; and if he insists again, fight with him … because such a person is (like) a devil” (4:495, Abu Said Al-Khudri).

I thought Satan rushes off at full speed at the call for “prayer?”

IV. Ibn Umar reported Allah’s Messenger as saying:

When anyone of you intend to eat (meal), he should eat with his right hand, and when he (intends) to drink he should drink with his right hand, for the Satan eats with his left hand and drink with his left hand” (Sahih Muslim 3:5008).

In primitive societies, the left hand was believed to be linked with the devil or an evil deity. Muhammad is relaying the pre-modern thinking of his time by implying that anyone using a left hand is of the devil.

Even today, many educated Muslims are so mentally imprisoned by this superstition that if you offer them money with a left hand, they won’t accept it. But today we know that using left hand has to do with the brain wiring, not Satan.

V. A person was mentioned before the Prophet and he was told that he had kept on sleeping till morning and had not got up for the prayers. The Prophet said, ‘Satan urinated in his ears (2:245, Narrated ‘Abdullah).

Of course Muhammad was morbidly obsessed with urine and faeces, he only needed to bring Satan into the picture.

VI. Satan puts three knots at the back of the head of any of you if he is asleep. On every knot he reads and exhales the following words, ‘The night is long, so stay asleep.’ When one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone; and when one performs ablution, the Second knot is undone, and when one prays, the third knot is undone … otherwise one gets up lazy with a mischievous heart (2:243, Abu Huraira).

The tying of knots was a practice attributed to witches and demons in 7th century Arabian culture, but Muhammad used this prevalent belief to reinforce his own rules so that a Muslim who no longer praises him or follows his rituals is deemed to be under the influence of Satan. Atrocious logic at its best.

VII. Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say ‘Ha,’ Satan will laugh at him (4:509, Abu Huraira).

In another place, Muslims are commanded to restrain their yawnings “with the help of [their] hand since it is the Satan that enters therein” (Muslim 41:7131).

What about the nose, can’t Satan access it too? Maybe Allah should have lived up to his “all-knowing” title by informing his prophet that yawning is a natural body mechanism through which it receives more oxygen!

VIII. When night falls (or its evening), keep your children close to you for the devils spread out at that time. But when an hour of the night elapses, you can let them free. Close the door and mention the name of Allah for Satan does not open a close door (4:523, Jabir bib Abdullah).

Satan was like a convenient boogeyman Muhammad used to hold Muslims in line. This sort of tactic seems to work well on people whose brains have not developed to maturity.

Children (and adults with the brain capacity of children) easily respond to fear, but real adults don’t. Islamic teachings make Muslims regress into a child-like state of mind.

IX. If anyone of you when intending to have a sexual intercourse with his wife says [English translation: ‘In the name of Allah. O Allah protect us from Satan and also protect what you bestow upon us’] and if the couple are destined to have a child (out of that very sexual relation) then Satan will never be able to harm that child (8:75:397).

In essence, Satan watches live porno shows in every Muslim bedroom so as to harm the product of their conjugal act.

X. If anyone of you rouses from sleep and performs the ablution, he should wash his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out thrice, because Satan has stayed in the upper part of his nose all the night (4:516).

Oh I didn’t know Satan was that minute. So let’s get this straight, the same Satan Muhammad battled with and tied to a mosque is being washed out of the noses of a billion Muslims every morning. How impressive.

XI. Muhammad said: “Whoever wants to see Satan let him take a look at Nabtal b. al-Harith!’ He was a sturdy black man with long flowing hair, inflamed eyes, and dark ruddy cheeks (Ibn Ishaq, Sirat Rasulallah, The Life of Muhammad, p 431).

In other words, the Satan that was much talked about in the Quran and hadiths doesn’t look like an Arab or Asian at all, he looks exactly like a black man! Isn’t that wonderful?

This is why many Arabs today consider African Muslims to be inferior and “devilish.” And you have African Muslims killing other African Muslims because of the teachings of this Arabian racist – a man who would have spat on their faces were he alive today.

Notice the consistent pattern in the hadiths so far:
a) Satan hangs around Muslims
b) He ties knots on their heads
c) He urinates in their ears
d) He enters their mouths when they yawn
e) He watches their married couples in bed and seeks to tamper with their conception
f) He pays them a home visit every night.
g) He stays in their noses all night long.

Technically, Satan is closer to Muslims than Allah himself. He is in their bathtubs, toilets, bedroom, doorsteps, food, water and bodies.

He even has a permanent residence permit in their “holy land!” Imagine a bunch of people from different countries risking their lives and paying huge amount of money into the Saudi treasury just to stone Satan – a spirit – with pebbles!

He is just too strong, he has refused to die all these centuries.

By Islamic law, no “infidel” (Jew, Christians or pagan) is permitted to enter Mecca, but Satan lives there all year round, and receives his blood meal almost annually in different ways – most especially from excited pilgrims shouting “Stone him or die trying!” Ah, the glory of Islam.

Allah finds Satan more tolerable in his “holy land” than Christians and Jews. Many Muslims don’t stop to think about this, but it tells a lot about who they really serve.

The Bible is clear, however, that Satan cannot be defeated by a physical weapon (like stones), Jesus Christ already defeated him 2,000 years ago at Calvary.

Christians today have spiritual authority given to them by Christ to enforce Satan’s defeat through spiritual weapons of divine power (Lk. 10:19). God – not Satan – abides with us and lives in us.

A Tiptoe through the Hadiths

Most Christians know of the importance of the Quran in Islam, but not much about the Hadiths; the second most authoritative text after the Quran.

The major difference between the Quran and Hadiths is: the former contains what Muhammad claimed are Allah’s words while the latter contains Muhammad’s words and acts as reported by his close followers.

Since the Quran presents Muhammad as the “perfect example” for Muslims (Sura 33:21), no Muslim can really practice Islam unless he emulates Muhammad and no Muslim can emulate Muhammad if he relies on the Quran alone. This is because it doesn’t contain much details about him.

The hadiths contain “what was transmitted on the authority of the Prophet, his deeds, sayings, tacit approval, or description of his sifaat meaning his physical appearance” (M. Azami, Studies in Hadith Methodology and Literature, 1978, 23).

Muhammad’s lifestyle are called Sunna. Both the hadiths (sayings) and his sunna (examples) form the basis of Sharia – the legal code of Islamic jurispudence.

An 11th century islamic scholar, Yusuf ibn abd al-Barr wrote that: “The Sunna is divided into two types … whoever rejects the consensus [of the sunnas] has rejected one of Allah’s textual stipulations and committed apostasy” (Jami’ Bayan al-llm, 2:33).

Islamic scholar, Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah declared: “The teachings of Islam are based primarily on the Quran and the Hadith, and, as we shall presently see, both are based on divine inspiration” (Introduction to Islam, p. 23).

There is a relatively new movement within Islam called the Quranist (or Quran-only) Muslims. These Muslims reject all hadiths as forgeries, obviously because of the monstrous image and absurd practices of Muhammad found in them.

But without the hadiths, there is no Islam because the rules and rites governing the “5 pillars” of Islam – the creed, fasting, prayer, almsgiving and pilgrimage – are in the Hadiths, not the Quran.

Neither the companions (sahaba) of Muhammad nor the first generations of Muslims (tabium) ever dreamed of the concept of “Quran only.”

The hadiths used today were collected and recorded by Muslims in the 9th and 10th centuries whereas Muhammad died in the 7th century, leaving a gap of 250 years between his time and the period the hadiths were collected.

Since Muhammad’s sayings and practices were orally transmitted for over a century and half, many of the hadith accounts and stories had been shapened by a progression of transmitters.

No doubt, many Islamic traditions attempted to elevate Muhammad above mediocrity. At a point, there were about 600, 000 hadithic accounts of Muhammad, each claiming to be genuine. Devoted Muslims decided to collect the sayings of Muhammad into books.

The first authentic collection is the Sahih Bukhari, by Abu Abdullah al-Jafari. He compiled his hadith within 16 years into 97. Though, he seemed to have collected them based on “suitability” instead of “reliability.”

The second was sahih Muslim collected by Abul Husain Muslim (Bukhari’s student). There were also the collections of Sunan Abu Dawuud and other lesser known hadiths such as Mishkatu’l Masabih. Islamic scholars generally classify hadiths as: sound (sahih), good (hasan), weak (daif) and fabricated (maudu).

Islamic scholar and translator, Muhammad Khan states: “It has been unanimously agreed that Iman Buhkari’s work is the most authentic of all other works in Hadith literature put together … the religious learned scholars of Islam said concerning him: ‘The most authentic book after the Book of Allah [the Quran] is Sahih Bukhari” (The Translation of Sahih Bukhari, 1979, p. xiv).

The teachings and sayings of Muhammad in the hadiths are a public relations nightmare to Islam. Below are some of them. (Unless otherwise indicated, all quotations are from the Bukhari hadith):

I. Ibn Umar reported Allah’s messenger as saying that a non-Muslim eats in 7 intestines while a Muslim eats in one intestine (Muslim 3:5113).

II. “Whenever a strong wind blew, anxiety appeared on the face on the Prophet. [fearing it might be a sign of Allah’s wrath]” (Bukhari 2:144)

I wonder why Allah didn’t explain to him that strong winds are natural phenomena.

III. Abdullah ibn Salam asked him three questions to test his prophethood: What would be the first sign of the end of the world, the first meal to be taken in paradise and why a child resembles his father. Muhammad replied:

“The first sign of the hour will be a fire that will bring together people from the East to the West. The first meal of the people of paradise will be extra lobe of fish liver… If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and get his discharge first, the child will resemble the father and if the woman gets her discharge first, the child will resemble her” (5:546).

This was where Muhammad dug a pit for himself. You can now understand why the Jews and Christians of his time rejected his claims as God’s prophet.

IV. The prophet rushed out of fear to pray on eclipse and continued his prayers until the eclipse came to an end. Allah show him the unseen during the eclipse (7:676).

How convenient. Allah showed him “unseen things,” but didn’t explain to him that eclipses are natural and need not be feared.

V. Some Bible characters were also mentioned in the hadiths, not without legendary flavours:

“…So once Moses went out to take a bath and put his clothes over a stone and that stone ran away with his clothes. Moses followed that stone saying ‘my clothes, o stone! My clothes, o stone! Till the people of Bani Israel saw him and said ‘by Allah, Moses has got no defect in his body.’ Moses took his clothes and began to beat the stone.” Abu Huraira added ‘By Allah, there are still six or seven marks present on the stone from that excessive beating” (1:5:277).

Moses, a great Biblical prophet, is portrayed as a bumbling dolt, running around buck naked, chasing a stone! Such gobbledygook.

VI. Allah created Adam, making him 60 cubits tall (4:543).

That means Adam was 90 feet tall like the height of a 3 storey building! Subhanallah, isn’t Allah great?

VII. The Prophet said, “Fever is from the heat of the [Hell] fire, so cool it with water” (7:619)

Everybody knows water cools down a hot body, but it takes a cave man to think high body temperature is from hell fire.

VIII. When one of his men asked: “What about the bone and animal dung?’ He answered ‘They are of the food of the jinns [demons] (5:58:200).

That shouldn’t be a surprise. The jinns told Muhammad they loved his Quran (Q 72:1). If they loved the Quran, why shouldn’t they also find dung appealing?

IX. The Prophet said, ‘By Allah, though I am the Apostle of Allah, yet I do not know what Allah will do to me (5:266).

If the person you are following or emulating is saying he doesn’t know what will become of him after death, then it’s foolishness to follow him.

Any educated, reasoning person who has not been blinded by cultish devotion, who reads the hadiths will be terribly disappointed (if not shocked) at the draconian laws and silly rules that permeate its pages. Here are some:

1. Eating garlics/onions forbidden. “Whoever has eaten garlic or onion because of hunger or otherwise should not come near our mosque” (1:812)

Why would God be offended by mouth odour?

2. Playing chess forbidden. Allah’s apostle said: “he who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine” (Muslim 4:5612).

3. Looking up during prayer forbidden. Muhammad said “people should avoid lifting their eyes towards the sky while supplicating in prayer, otherwise their eyes would be snatched away” (Muslim 1:863:1573).

4. Rules on drinking and touch. Muhammad said: “Whenever any of you drinks water, he should not breathe in the drinking utensil, and whenever any of you goes to a lavatory, he should neither touch his penis nor clean his private parts with his right hand” (1:4:156)

5. Holy Spit. “By Allah, whenever Allah’s Apostle spitted, the spittle would fall in the hand of one of them [i.e his companions] who would rub it in his face and skin” (3:891).

6. Flatulence forbidden. “The prayer of a person who does Hadath (passes urine, stool or wind) is not accepted till he performs [repeats] the ablution…What is Hadath? Abu Huraira replied ‘Hadath’ means the passing of wind from the anus” (1:4:137).

It was obviously Muhammad himself that was offended by flatulence, mouth odour etc. so he made them into laws.

7. Pictures forbidden. “Angel” Gabriel informed Muhammad: “We angels do not enter a house which contains a picture or a dog” (4:450)

8. Knots on Muslim Heads. Allah Apostle said “during your sleep, Satan knots three knots at the back of the head of each of you…” (4:54:491)

Oh my. How I wished these knots were described. Do they look like dreadlocks? Brazillian weaving? Rapunzel’s hair?

9. Evil Spirits in your toilets. “Whenever the prophet went to answer the call of nature he used to say … O Allah, I seek Refuge with You from all offensive and wicked things (evil deeds and evil spirits)” (1:4:144).

This is why good Muslims temporarily play dumb in the restroom.

10. Defecation rules. “If anyone of you goes to an open space for answering the call of nature he should neither face nor turn his back towards the Qibla, he should either face the east or the west” (1:4:146).

11. Wiping genitals with stones. “…whoever cleans his private parts with stones should do it with odd number of stones.” (1:4:162)

12. Shoe rules. “If you want to put on your shoes, put on the right shoe first, and if you want them off, take the left one first.” (7:747)

13. A fly in the cup. “If a housefly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease” (4:537).

14. Urine stains and Hell “Once the Prophet, while passing one of the grave-yards of Medina or Mecca, heard the voices of two persons being tortured in their graves. The Prophet then added, “Yes! [they are being tortured for a major sin]. Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine” (1:57:215).

Oh the irony. The same man who could supposedly hear the dead talk in their graves eventually ate a poisoned meat which led to his death.

15. Let the beards hang! “Trim the moustache and lengthen the beard (let the beard hang). Oppose the fire worshippers” (Muslim 1:29). This is done to imitate Muhammad whose beard was said to be dense (2:259).

From these cited examples, two main facts can be deduced:

(a) Islam is essentially a personality cult revolving around the superstitious ideas, teachings and obsessions of one man – Muhammad. The day a Muslim starts to question what he taught and practiced on the basis of reason, history or science, his faith in Islam (imaan) will wither and die. This is why it’s considered a great danger in Islam to speak against Muhammad. To doubt him is to extinguish Islam!

(b) Islam is a legalistic religion without any personal relationship with God. It is rather based on silly, austere and retrogressive traditions: “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch! These things are all destined to perish with use because they are based on human commands and teachings” (Colossians 2:21-22).
