Another Testament of Jesus Christ?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints adheres to 4 sacred books – the Bible, the Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price and Doctrines and Covenants. Though they play lip service to the Bible, they revere their other “holy books” far more than it.

The Pearl of Great Price and Doctrines and Covenants are collections of the revelations of Joseph Smith and are doctrinal in nature (the latter includes the teachings of Smith’s successors, with dates and summary of the messages).

I will be focusing on the Book of Mormon here. The reason is because, it’s said to be the most accurate book.

Joseph Smith is quoted in its introduction saying it is “the most correct book on earth and the keystone of our religion … a man would get closer to God by abiding by its precepts than by any other book.”

If this gnomic claim is true, then it means the Bible is not a divine revelation. But if it’s false, then the book of Mormon must be exposed for what it is – a diabolic fraud.

The book of Mormon, said to be ‘Another Testament of Jesus’ and it is integral to the Latter Day Saints (LDS): “Take away The Book of Mormon and the revelations and where is our religion? We have none” (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, p. 99).

Since the New Testament proves its authenticity by its harmony with the Old Testament, and being a reliable record of eye-witnesses, this alleged “testament of Jesus” must also be judged by the same criteria.

Therefore, where it contradicts the Bible’s messages are false. These are the 3 criteria:

1. The book must be a record of eye witnesses.
2. It must be accurate historically, scientifically and logically.
3. It must be consistent with the Bible.

The book of Mormon contains the story of two great civilizations that lived in the Americas before Christopher Columbus’ discovery in 1492.

It talks about some ancient Jeredite people who originally lived around the tower of Babel. A prophet among them was told by God to build barges to travel across the ocean to the new world. After its completion, the people complained to the Lord that He had forgotten to put holes/windows in the barges, so He commanded them to be included.

The Jeredites left the Old World and landed in the place now called Central America and became a great civilization. But these people exterminated themselves and their civilization collapsed.

Then in 600 BC, a prophet Lehi was told by God to leave Jerusalem and come to the New World. He led the people and also landed in Central America where they built a large civilization.

Lehi had two sons: Laman and Nephi. Laman was wicked and was cursed by God with a black skin while the Nephites retained their white skin. As time went on, the descendants of Laman (the Lamanites) and Nephi (the Nephites) grew but constantly warred with each other.

The book also claims that Jesus came to the Nephites after His resurrection, preached the gospel to them and instituted baptism and other church ordinances.

The white-skinned Nephites were later wiped out by the black skinned Lamanites. But the last surviving Nephite, a man named Mormon, was said to have collected the history of his people and wrote them on golden plates which he buried in a hill in Palmyra, New York, before he was killed (Mormon 8:13-14).

It was these golden plates that Joseph Smith claimed he dug up as led by angel Moroni (allegedly Mormon in his past life) and translate from Reformed Egyptian into English using a pair of magical spectacles.

His translation of these golden plates is the present-day Book of Mormon (also called “the golden bible”). This is stated in the book itself:

And now behold, we have written this record according to our knowledge, in the characters which are called among us the reformed Egyptian…” (Mormon 9:32).

1. The book fails the criteria of witnesses.

Who was an eye witness to the events described in the book? Even more to the point, who saw these golden plates and witnessed their translation other than Joseph Smith?

The Book of Mormon Introduction includes two statements. The first is called “the testimony of the three witnesses” with their names, and the second, “the testimony of the eight witnesses” with their names – all claiming to have seen these golden plates.

The problem is, these first three witnesses were later excommunicated by Mormons who accused them of lying, stealing, cheating and counterfeiting, defrauding and persecuting Mormons (David Whitmer, An Address to All Believers in Christ, 1887, 27).

We can’t accept their testimonies. All of the second 8 witnesses – with the exception of Joseph’s father and two brothers – later left the Mormon church too. Thus, their witnesses are not tenable either.

The “Reformed Egyptian” language Smith claimed he translated the book from does not exist.

Even when he managed to obtain an Egyptian manuscript which he translated as “the book of Abraham,” he translated the name of an Egyptian moon god 107 different ways in different places in the text, none correctly. This heavily militates against his claims (Jerald and Sandra Tanner, Mormonism, Shadow or Reality? Utah Lighthouse Ministry, 1963, p. 321).

2. The book of Mormon – hailed as “the most accurate book on earth” – has undergone over 4,000 spelling, grammatical and textual corrections by Mormon leaders since it was produced.

Some of its texts also changed as Joseph Smith changed his theology. For example:

(a) In the 1830 version, the words in 1Nephi 11:8 were “the virgin thou seest is the mother of God” (Catholics would have loved this version) but the present versions now read: “the virgin thou seest is the mother of the Son of God.”

(b) The 1Nephi 11:21 in the 1830 version reads: “Behold the Lamb of God, yes, even the Eternal Father.” It now reads “Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father.

(c) In Mosiah 21:28, the word there initially was “King Benjamin” but now it reads “King Mosiah.”

How can these changing words be God’s inspired word? Truth does not change. A book inspired by God doesn’t need corrections, additions or subtraction.

The book of Mormon is also plagued with historical blunders:

a) It says prophet Lehi and his family found a large valley and a river that emptied into the Red Sea where they rested and were refreshed, when they were traveling from Jerusalem.

There is no such valley in history and there was no river anywhere along the shore of the Red Sea (Gordon Fraser, What Does the Book of Mormon Teach?, Moody, 1964, p. 33).

b) The book mentions weapons of warfare, including bows and arrows being used in the Americas around 400 A.D.

The problem here is, bows and arrows were not in America until after 1000 A.D. The archaeological blunders in the book are mind-boggling.

c) It claims the people in the Old World were using steel and weapons and tools before 600BC. But steel was not invented or processed until 1856. (Wallbank and Taylor, Civilization Past and Present, Chicago, 1956, 327-328).

d) The book describes the Americas as a well-developed civilization:

“The whole face of the land had become covered with buildings and the people were as numerous… as the sand of the sea” (Mormon 1:7).

It also speaks of the people owning “silks, and of fine linen… oxen and cows, and of sheep, and of swine, and of goats… horses and asses, and there were elephants…” (Ether 9:17-19) and “ships, temples like Solomon’s synagogues, sanctuaries all built after the manner of the Jews” (Heldman 3:14, 2Nep 5:15-16).

These are fanciful creations of Joseph Smith’s fertile mind. The population of the Americas wasn’t that as high, and there were no pigs, cows, goats, horses, chariots or silk in America before 1492!

e) If the Jews were the ancestors of the American Indians, why are there are no remains or traces of Jewish temples or anything that could be identified with the civilization described in the book of Mormon?

The book claims American Indians are Jews with black skin, but Anthropology has established that the Indians are Mongoloid in origin and their skins are not black.

The old inhabitants of the Americas were the Incas, Aztecs and the Mayas. None of these are mentioned in the book of Mormon, but rather speaks of Jaredites, Lamanites and Nephites. Again, this “another testament of Jesus” is shown to be a false revelation.

The book of Mormon’s claims of having been originally written on golden tablets are legends, but most scholars have come to the conclusion that the book of Mormon was originally a romantic fiction novel written by Solomon Spaulding (1761-1816), which Joseph Smith stole and reworked by inserting some “religious” material into it.

A handwriting analysis of the original text of the book reveals that the bulk of the manuscript was from the handwriting of Spaulding, and not Smith.

The book of Mormon revealed nothing new. The idea of the Jews migrating to the New World was first mentioned by Menasseh Ben Israel, an occult Kabbalist, in his book, The Hope of Israel in 1650.

Another evidence that the book of Mormon was a late work can be seen in how it used Elizabethan English from the King James Version and even plagiarizes over 27,000 words (including its mistranslations) from it. The book of Mormon was obviously formulated by someone who lived after 1611 and had access to the KJV.

3. The book also contradicts the Bible in several places.

(a) In Numbers 21:5-9, Moses says God sent “fiery serpents” into the camp of Israel to punish them.

The book of Mormon says they were “fiery flying serpents” (1Nephi 17:41). Such ridiculous stuff.

(b) The book of Mormon glorifies the original sin by saying Adam and Eve sinned in order to have children as God commanded (2 Neph. 2:22-25). So they had no joy or peace until they sinned!

(c) It teaches that remission of sins is by baptism (3 Neph. 12:2). But the Bible says this is done by faith in the blood of Christ (Acts 10:43, 16:30).

This book teaches salvation by works which is a false gospel (Eph. 2:8, Gal. 1:8).

(d) It claims Jesus was born in Jerusalem (Alma 7:9-10). But the Bible says it’s in Bethlehem (Matt 2:1, Mic. 5:2).

(e) God said that the Jews will retain their identity till the end of time. They will not “evolve” into another people, till He brings them into their own land (Num. 23:9, Ezk. 37:21), but the book of Mormon claims the Jews evolved into American Indians, a claim that has no scientific backing.

Conclusively, the book of Mormon is not “another testament of Jesus” but a false revelation from the devil.

The Vicars of Christ?

The pope is the central figure of Catholicism. This is reflected in the unbiblical and blasphemous titles he’s addressed as: Most Holy Lord, Chief of the Church in the World, High Priest and Vicars of Christ.

Pope Leo XIII said: “We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty” (Great Encyclical Letters of Leo, XIII, 304).

Pope Nicholas said: “I am all in all and above all so that God, Himself and I, The Vicar of God, have but one consistory, and I am able to do almost all that God can do … What therefore, can you make of me but God?” (Decretals of the Lord Pope Gregory, Liber 1, 7:3:99).

Christopher Marcellus at the 5th Lateran council, said to the pope “Thou art the shepherd, thou art the physician, thou art the rector, thou art the husbandman; finally thou art another god on earth” (Session IV, Mansci. Sc. Vol. 32, col 761).

If words have meaning, these adulation and praise indicate that the popes are held as gods, or demigods at least. A Catholic friend once told me, “Do you realise that when the pope stands before the High Altar during Mass, he is God?” I replied, “He could be God to you, but to us he’s a mere mortal who will die and be replaced.”

What makes the pope any different from Jim Jones, Myung Moon and other cult leaders? If you have ever seen the wild enthusiasm of the thousands of Catholics who gather when the pope makes a personal appearance or the fawning euphoria of those of them fortunate to touch him, they always convey a notion: “We have touched God in human clothes. What an achievement!”

The word “vicar” is derived from the Latin word “vicarius” which in Greek means “anti” or “another.” So, the Vicar of Christ title can either stand for “another Christ” like the Holy Spirit, or the Antichrist. The Antichrist spirit manifests by opposing and exalting itself above God and sitting as God over people (2 Thess. 2:3, 4).

The history of many of the popes also reveal who they represent. Their biographies in the Catholic Encyclopedia read almost like a soap opera, full of intrigues, assassinations, sex and plots. But here I will restrict myself to some of the sexually immoral ones.

(1) Pope Sergius III (904-911)

He obtained his papal office by murder. The annals of the Catholic Church tells openly about his open affair with his mistress, Marozia, the daughter of Theodora (the wife of a Roman senator). She bore him several illegitimate children. Baronius described him as a monster. For 7 years, this pope sat on the chair of St. Peter, with his concubine filling the place with their bastard sons. Historian Edward Gibbons wrote:

“The influence of two prostitutes, Marozia and Theodora, was founded on their wealth and beauty, their political and amorous intrigues. The most strenuous of their lovers were rewarded with the Roman mitre … The bastard son, the grandson, and the great grandson of Marozia – a rare genealogy – were seated in the Chair of St. Peter” (The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, London, 1830, chapter xlix).

After Sergius III’s death, Theodora maneuvered her new priest lover from Ravena as his successor: Pope Anastasius III. That prostitutes would determined who would be pope could hardly be termed “apostolic succession.

(2) Pope John XII (955-63)

He was Marozia’s grandson who became a pope at the age of 18. He was so obsessed with illicit sex that he had many regular mistresses.

The Catholic Encyclopedia (8:427) describes him as “a coarse, immoral man, whose life was such that the Lateran was spoken of as a brothel and the moral corruption in Rome became the subject of general odium … On 6 November, a synod of 50 bishops was convened in St Peter’s; John was accused of sacrilege, simony, perjury, murder, adultery and incest … [including toasting Satan at St. Peter’s altar].”

Bishop Liudprand of Cremona, a papal chronicler at that time wrote: “No honest lady dared to show herself in public; for pope John had no respect either for single girls, married women, or widows – they were sure to be defiled by him, even on the tombs of the holy apostles Peter and Paul.”

He recorded that pope John was so in love with a mistress that he made her a governor of several cities! (Liber Pontificals 2:246). John XII was finally killed by a husband who caught him in bed with his wife.

(3) Boniface VIII (1294-1303)

This pope was so immoral that he had a mother and daughter as lovers. It was during his reign that Italian poet, Dante, visited Rome. He described the Vatican as “a sewer of corruption” and assigned Boniface (and Popes Nicholas III and Clement V) to “the lower parts of hell.”

Boniface openly declared that “to lie carnally with women or with boys is no more a sin than rubbing one’s hands together” (Catholic Encyclopedia, 2: 670). He also called Jesus a “hypocrite” and professed to be an atheist.

“Scarcely any possible crime was omitted – infidelity, heresy, simony, gross and unnatural immorality, idolatry, magic, loss of the Holy land, death of [Pope] Celestine” were charges brought against him. In fact, “even modern Catholic writers class him among the wicked Popes, as an ambitious, haughty and unrelenting man, deceitful also and treacherous, his whole pontificate was one record of evil” (Ibid, 668).

(4) Pope John XXIII (1410-1415)

This man got the papal chair by poisoning a previous pope Alexander V (1409-1410) to death. He was described as a “former pirate, mass-murderer, mass-fornicator with a partiality for nuns, adulterer on a scale unknown outside fables, simoniac par excellence, blackmailer, pimp, master of dirty tricks” (Peter de Rosa, Vicars of Christ, Crown Publishers, 1988, 93-94).

He opened the Council of Constance which eventually condemned him to prison. About 54 charges laid against him had to be reduced into 5.

He “was accused by thirty-seven witnesses (mostly bishops and priests) of fornication, adultery, incest, sodomy, simony, theft, and murder! It was proved by a legion of witnesses that he had seduced and violated three hundred nuns. His own secretary, Niem said that had at Boulogne kept a harem, where not less than two hundred girls had been victims of his lubricity” (Will Durant, Story of Civilization: The Reformation, Simon and Schuster, 1952, p. 10)

A Vatican record says: “His lordship, Pope John, committed perversity with the wife of his brother, incest with holy nuns, intercourse with virgins, adultery with the married, and all sorts of sex crimes … wholly given to sleep and other carnal desires, totally adverse to the life and teaching of Christ … he was publicly called the Devil’s Incarnate” (Sancororum Concillorium, 27:663).

To increase his wealth, Pope John taxed about everything—including prostitution, gambling, and usury. He has been called “the most depraved criminal who ever sat on the Papal throne.”

(5) Pope Alexander VI (1492-1503)

Borgia Rodrigo (real name) bought the papal chair by bribing off his rival, Cardinal Sforza with villas, abbeys, towns and four mule-loads of silver. (So much for apostolic succession!). Alexander VI who committed his first murder at age 12, after becoming a pope cried out: “I am Pope, Pontiff, Vicar of Christ!”

He had ten known illegitimate children by his numerous mistresses. At the age of 58, he took a 15 year old mistress named Giulia Farnese. A Florentine scholar has this to say:

“His manner of living was dissolute. He knew neither shame nor sincerity, neither faith nor religion. Moreover, he was possessed by an insatiable greed, an overwhelming ambition and a burning passion for the advancement of his many children who, in order to carry out his iniquitous decrees, did not scruple to employ the most heinous means” (Francesco Guicciardini, Storia I, 20 cited in E. R. Chamberlin, The Bad Popes, 1969, 173).

(6) Paul III (1534-1549)

He was the brother of Borgia’s 15 year old mistress and convened the Council of Trent to counter the Reformation. As a Cardinal, he fathered 3 sons and a daughter. On the day of his coronation, he celebrated the baptism of his two great grandchildren and appointed his nephews as Cardinals. He sought advise with occult astrologers and sponsored festivals with singers, dancers and jesters (Life, July 5, 1963)

Inside St. Peter’s basilica his burial monument is adorned with reclining female figures. One of these figures (called Justice) was naked for 300 years until Pius XII had clothes painted on her. This figure was modelled after Paul III’s sister, Giulia. Thus, even in art, papal immorality is immortalized.

To call these deeply immoral men “vicars of Christ” or “his Holiness” is a mockery of Christ. The fruit of these men’s lives are terribly rotten. Rome today has tried hard to sweep the evils of its modern popes under the carpet with sweet homilies on sexual purity, but the reality is that, these same evils are still carried on today underground.

The Bible says “Can an Ethiopian change the colour of his skin and can a leopard take away its spots?” (Jer. 13:23). The answer is no. The fall of man and the depravity of the human heart betray the titles of the popes as God’s representatives on earth as a lie cemented by destructive pride. No, these guys are not Christ’s vicars, they are vicars of self and Satan.

The Prophet and his Demons

Muhammad’s evil ideology can be explained from a Biblical point of view: he was led by evil spirits.

Many Muslims find that statement offensive, but these facts cannot be brushed aside since even the Hadiths and biographies recorded certain unusual experiences Muhammad had.

Understanding the origins of Muhammad’s visions is important. It reveals the spirits behind Islam which control those who submit to it.

According to Islamic records, Muhammad received his call to be a prophet while he was meditating (another version: sleeping) in the cave of Hira which was about 40 miles away from Mecca.

A spirit was said to have appeared to him holding a brocade, saying “Read!” When Muhammad asked “what shall I recite?” the being squeezed him so tightly that he nearly died and asked him to read again. At the third time, the being said “Read in the name of thy Lord who created, who created man of blood coagulated” (The Life of Muhammad, translation of Sirat Rasulallah by Alfred Guillaume, 1955 p. 106).

After the spirit left, Muhammad ran home screaming to his wife, Khadija, “Cover me! cover me!!” and they covered him until his fear was over.

Before this experience, Muhammad had joined a mystic group called the Hanifs who used to meditate in the caves of Hira.

Occult meditation has been an integral part of all Eastern religions and it’s utilized to contact the spirit realm and spirits that masquerade as various deities. Since Muhammad was indulging in this, it’s not a surprise he was visited by a spirit being.

The words of this being is also questionable. Man was not made from coagulated or frozen blood, but from the dust (Gen. 2:27). An angel of God would definitely know this.

And why would God’s angel be terrorizing a man (said to be an illiterate) to read? Doesn’t that sound suspicious?

After this experience, Muhammad didn’t believe he saw an angel of God, given the horrifying experience he had. Khadija then took him to her cousin, Waraqa, a “Christian” priest said to be versed in the Scriptures. Waraqa told Muhammad that what he saw in the cave must have been angel Gabriel who also appeared to Moses (Sira p. 107).

Now, if Waraqa had truly known the Bible as it was claimed, he should have known that angel Gabriel didn’t appear to Moses but rather to Daniel, several centuries after.

Based on this error, Muhammad began to think he was also a prophet like Moses and nicknamed the spirit inspiring him as “Gabriel.”

Waraqa however said:

“Send for [Muhammad] so that I may question him and hear what he says and talk to him. For I am afraid it may be someone other than Gabriel, for certain devils imitate him and by so mislead and corrupt some men. This can result in a man become confused and even crazy whereas he had been of sound mind” (Ibn Kathir, The Life Of the Prophet, Al-Sira al-Nabawiyya, 1:297).

On Biblical grounds, Waraqa was spot on here. This “angel Gabriel” Muhammad was said to have encountered in the cave is very different from the angel Gabriel of the Bible. When he appeared to Daniel:

While he was speaking, I fell face down in a deep sleep. But he lifted me to my feet...” (Dan. 8:18)

When Gabriel suddenly came flying in at the time of the evening sacrifice … he explained: Daniel, I am here to help you understand the vision” (Dan. 9: 21-22).

Angel Gabriel was friendly and helpful, not violent or forceful towards Daniel.

Angel Gabriel also appeared to Zechariah proclaiming that he would give birth to John the baptist who would “make ready a people prepared for the Lord [Jesus]” (Lk. 1:1-20). And he appeared to Mary telling her Jesus would “be great and will be called the Son of God Most High” (Lk. 1:26-38).

On the other hand, the “Gabriel” of Muhammad denied both the Lordship and Sonship of Christ.

Now, why would God send an angel to say one thing to several people and then send him to one pagan man six centuries later to say the opposite? Evidently, Muhammad didn’t encounter an angel of God.

Perhaps to assure his readers that the Gabriel from the cave was confirmed by a Christian, a Quranic translator wrote in his introduction that “Khadija tried the spirit.” By what criteria did Khadija try this spirit?

A hadith says that one day while she was alone with Muhammad (who could see the spirit), she asked him to sit on her lap and he said the spirit was still standing there. Then she exposed her body and Muhammad said the spirit had disappeared. She then declared that the spirit must be an angel of God (Mishkat al-Masabih IV, 154).

According to this silly “test,” a good angel is one that avoids looking at a woman’s nudity! That would have been so absurd, if it wasn’t so laughable. I wonder how much Khadija knew about angels or demons.

From the little recorded about her, she was apparently a heretical Christian. Even by Islamic standards, her deduction is invalid because Muhammad said a woman’s witness is half that of that of a man (Sura 2:282).

As the new Arabian prophet “like Moses,” Muhammad began to boldly recite what the spirit was giving him, but he soon became very depressed and began to contemplate suicide:

“He said ‘I have been meditating throwing myself from a mountain crag, but while I was so meditating, he [Gabriel] appeared to me and said ‘O Muhammad I am Gabriel, and thou are the messenger of God” (Bukhari 9:87:111).

When you compare this to the many prophets in the Bible who encountered God’s angel, you won’t find a single place where anyone of them became depressed and suicidal as a result of that encounter. Remember, Waraqa said evil angels cause mental illness.

When Muhammad left Mecca, he claimed to have met with some spirits/jinn in the desert of Taif and convert some of them to Islam. (If they were good spirits why did they have to be “converted”?).

The statements of these demons are contained in an entire chapter (72) of the Quran. Muhammad told his Muslim followers:

“There is no one among you but a companion among the jinn has been assigned to him’ They said, ‘Even you, O Messenger of Allaah?’ He said ‘Even me, but Allaah has helped me with him and became a Muslim (or I am safe from him) so he only enjoins me to do that which is good” (Muslim, 2814).

These demon guides are called qareen in Islam. Notice that Muhammad himself didn’t deny having a demon guide, but lied that he has made him to become a “Muslim” and he assists him to do good. Actually, Muhammad was outright evil, proving that he was demonized.

On another occasion, Muhammad was sick for 2 or 3 nights. “Then a lady (the wife of Abu Lahab) came and said ‘O Muhammad! I think that your Satan has forsaken you, for I have not seen him with you for two or three nights!” (Bukhari 66:60:475).

Even the Meccan pagans knew he had a demon guide. No Godly prophet in the Bible had demon guides working for or assisting them. That is witchcraft.

The hadiths described how Muhammad used to act whenever he was said to be receiving messages from his “Gabriel.” Such manifestations were disturbing. Little wonder many of the Arabians (who were familiar with demonic activity) knew he was demon-possessed and rejected his claims (Q 81:22, 69:41).

(a) He said: “sometimes it [revelations] comes to me like the ringing of a bell and that is the most troublesome to me” (Mishkat IV, 360). Yet Muhammad himself said elsewhere: “The bell is the musical instrument of Satan” (Muslim, 24:5279).

(b) Aisha reported: “I saw him while the revelation descended on him on an intensely cold day then it left him while his brow steamed with sweat” (Mishkat IV, 360). Extreme perspiration is a common experience spiritists have during mediumship.

(c) He would fall “down unconscious on the ground with both his eyes [open] towards the sky” (Bukhari 6:448). This is how demons manifest (cf. Mk. 9:20).

(d) He would tremble as he laid on the ground like someone having a convulsion (Bukhari 1:4).

(e) He would hear and see things others couldn’t (Bukhari 4:458). These phenomena are called clairaudience and clairvoyance.

(f) He would sometimes snore like a camel. Or sound similar to bees (Bukhari 2:16:354). Demons growl or shriek through people.

(g) He said: “sometimes the angel assumes the form of a man for me and talks with me” (Mishkat IV, 360). This is called materialization.

Anyone familiar with the occult or demonology knows about these experiences which are demonic in nature.

There is not a single prophet of God in the Bible having such strange manifestations when receiving messages from God. Muhammad was deceived by a demon disguised as “an angel of light.”

The messages inspired by this spirit have prevented many Muslims from the truth in Christ and drive them to hate and kill those who follow Him.
